EAQ has been a little concerned that Sky is not totally comfortable on her feet. She is not lame but not right either so we got the wonderful Tork Cowan to have a look at her. It appears that Sky carries the majority of her weight on her left shoulder and has forgotten she has hind legs to share the burden. She has been carrying herself and her riders this way for many years and now that shoulder is breaking down. Unless a horse is taught to use their hind legs to carry their weight (and yours!) they will pull themselves along on their shoulders and injuries like Skys will eventually develop. Sky has some exercises to do to and the supplement Turmericle has been recommended which we have got for her. We can’t undo the damage to her shoulder but we can teach her hind legs to start working as nature intended. This is sadly a very, very common problem with older horses but the good news is…… it is a very preventable one.
For more information on how to prevent this happening to your horse please check out this excellent website. Horses are just like us, if we don’t use our muscles correctly, over time they stiffen, our posture suffers, so does our joints, pain develops and movement becomes limited
