There have been some significant changes since I last wrote this blog. We had a couple of weeks of rain so I didn’t get out to Fleur very much and then Megan’s house sold which meant we had to move both Sky and Fleur. To make working with Fleur easier we at EAQ decided to bring the girls to foster my house and yesterday they arrived.
It has always been possible to catch Fleur as since coming into care she has always worn a halter, pick up her bucket and once her head is in the bucket – grab the halter, Fleur is caught but very unhappy! Immediately she tenses up but does submit and resign herself to whatever is going to happen. It is very sad being witness to such fear in her eyes and it is this fear of Fleurs that we are working towards changing. Megan has made great progress with Fleur since she came into care but it is definitely time to move things along as her feet are getting worse.
EAQ’s dream for Fleur is for her to want to be with people, to walk up to them of her own free will as soon as she sees a halter and to have no fear of being caught. So we will work on replacing her old negative experiences with positive ones and see how we go.
Today I took off Fleur’s halter, this is a bit of a symbolic gesture to say to her that I have faith, belief and trust in her that we will be able to work together and build a trusting harmonious relationship. It was my way of leveling the playing field, it gives her the choice to stay or go and if the truth be told it means that I cannot be tempted into grabbing hold of her halter and forcing her to stay – I may never be able to catch her again only time will tell!
